Go Out into All the World

Image
Hey Jesse,  You are the only one who reads this so I wanted to give you a personal goodbye here. Thank-you so much for caring for us throughout this year, and for randomly adding blog posts that we can look back on and keep as a keepsake forever. I know I never keep to the word limits, and I don't expect this one to be an exception, so buckle down and we'll go for one last ride! I love you so much and really the fun, wisdom and care you bring to our class! I will really treasure memories of our chats, hangouts and getting to sleep together on the Kayak trip! Imagine that! Being in a tent group with students... You have done an incredible job leading us this year. I can't wait to visit in Coaldale and meet "your friend from Ywam." Love you to bits! - Kaylee Johnson For the rest of you out there (who don't actually exist), I have exactly 18 days left of my Kaleo experience, so this will be my last blog post. Throughout Kaleo I have learned so much about living ...

Missions Mania and Allegiance

Image
Brief Overview Wow, the past couple weeks have really flown by. On February 11, 2021 us Kaléos (as the staff like to call us) left for Street Ministry and the beginning of our Missions Trip. Several themes and lessons were impressed on me over the course of the next two weeks, but the importance of prayer and intimacy in surrender to Christ were the most important. (Sorry I didn't use the brownie point word "allegiance," but surrender fit the sentence better ;)) Whether it was Francisco in Nanaimo, Jeremy in Victoria, Students at CQ, the book for class or my own conscience, God thoroughly ensured I got the point. Allegiance means surrender to God's will in every aspect of your life, and this mission trip allowed practical expressions of my allegiance. Every day there was a call to do something new and challenging. Teaching me to step out of my comfort zone, and allow God to work through me. By giving up a little of my time and being intentional to ask God to use me. E...

CVYN - A Fun Night for Youth

Image
CVYN - Cowichan Valley Youth Night This annual event for youth from all over the Cowichan Valley is an awesome opportunity for Kaleo students to grow in leadership and have a blast interacting with teens! In a normal year youth would come out to Camp Qwanoes where they would be hosted with music, lessons, games and fun!  This year, due to the Covid-19 Pandemic, our talented team managed to produce an online night for teens. CVYN was a difficult group project for me. I often struggled to understand what was expected of me, and whether my role was actually needed at all. I was given the role of breakout room coordinator which meant I was responsible for choosing the rooms students would be in for the Zoom Break-out Sessions. I was able to apply my organizational skills and get 6 rooms set up with chairs, tables and laptops. I felt a little scrambled on the Friday because I had a last minute request to switch rooms. Last minute problem solving is not my gift, but I was able to make so...

Christmas break, Fun, Rush and Challenges

Image
Merry Christmas and Happy New year!     It was such a blessing to be able to go home for Christmas! Due to the Covid regulations in the Yukon, I was forced to spend some amazing quality time with my family.  Travel and Goodbyes     My Christmas break really started at 12 am December 17, when I broke the spikeball net. Things got better and worse from there. I figured that was about the time I should go finish bed-bug proofing my room before the holidays. I didn't. We played spikeball and Tip-it for several hours, but dispite that I was done packing by two, and went back down to chat with everyone. Throughout the night, people gradually said began to trickle away, saying there good-byes. I, however, and a couple others, decided to stay up the entire night through. The one of the saddest parts of my Christmas break was 5:00 in the morning when, after hugs and tears, two of my close friends climbed into a pick-up truck and drove away. The rest of the morning ...

An Introduction to the Old Testament, a Film and Class.

Image
The making of a Masterpiece       The past three weeks have been fairly intense, and my world has mostly revolved around the Old Testament creative project.  For anyone who is not immersed in Kaleo Culture, every year, as an assignment, the Kaleo students are tasked with creating an "imaginative, well-written presentation of the Old Testament" in the form of a director's cut movie. This assignment is entirely student led, and usually fairly stressful for all those involved. We set a vision, write a script, find props, locations, film and edit. We had been warned with nightmares of 16 hour film days on top of classes, and class fights with impacts lasting weeks, and it was due November 19th, a day that was steadily creeping up on us.     November 2nd in the midst of Love Crofton, the directors for the annual Kaleo Old Testament film were announced. Korey came to the front of the class and called four names. David Tilroe, Nolan Gartly...

Service Week: Love Crofton and beyond

Image
The first week of November was crazy! Just as our Youth and Camp Ministry course was winding down, and our Introduction to the Old Testament course was winding up, we were presented with an amazing opportunity to serve the residents of our community.       Love Crofton, is an annual event that is a partnership between Warmland Church and Camp Qwanoes through the Kaléo program. For three days, us students put aside our own schedules and responsibilities of course work, to do yard work in the community we are living in. The week was challenging and rewarding. We experienced everything from being dropped off at the wrong address, to working hard to get the weed whacker started in the rain. Thankfully, God blessed us with an amazing leadership team, and a good friend who both lent us his pocket-knife and started up the weed whacker every 20 minutes for us (thanks Nolan!). Something that I have really enjoyed about this week, is being able to se...

Month One, An Introduction to Life and Leadership at Kaléo

Image
A New Beginning       College is a big change in a person's life, but throughout it all God has shown me so much love and faithfulness. I'm the oldest in my family, and blessed with amazing parents and brothers, so it was hard to leave them all behind. My Mom has always been my support system, and it took a lot of courage for me to step into the airport alone. (Airport Security always beeps for me).      I took that tiny step, and left everything I had known behind. Ahead of me lay adventure, school, and the unknown. In the midst of a physical world, where nothing was sure, I was able to rely on the God who created the physical and spiritual world, to remain faithful and sure. I arrived at the Victoria Airport without incident, and met with the three other students who flew in that day. Due to a slight communication error we were afforded quite a bit of time to visit in the smoky air of Victoria before we were picked up and on our way to Camp Qwanoes t...
